Brunel University has a history of supporting talented sportsmen and sportswomen that stretches back to the 1960s and we have doubled our efforts with the Olympic and Paralympic Games being held here in our city in 2012. The new Brunel Sports Scholarship is more than just financial assistance; it is a programme of support tailored to the particular needs of elite athletes in higher education.The effectiveness of the University’s elite sports programme is shown by the achievements of our former students. What does the Brunel University Sports Scholarships Programme package include?
The programme is designed to benefit elite performance athletes by supporting their academic study and sporting profession simultaneously. To enable a balance between these demands the scheme includes the following:
* Sum of money
* Athlete-friendly accommodation on campus next to sports facilities*
* Mentoring support for general advice on balancing academic study with training requirements
* Talent workshops in strength and conditioning, plyometrics, for example
* Free use of world-class sports facilities, including High Performance Athletics Centre
* Free Brunel University Sport kit
* Sports Scholars celebration event
* Media promotion of your achievements
* Product support through Lucozade Sport Science Academy
Who can apply for a Brunel University Sport Scholarship?
Anyone can apply for an award as long as they have met the academic requirements for a course and subsequently been given a confirmed place at Brunel University for the academic year 2009/10.
As main criteria, all applicants must be able to demonstrate sporting achievement at Junior International level or equivalent in one of the Sport England Priority Sports listed below. Please note that competition for scholarships can be very high and you must be able to show evidence of your sporting achievements.
Sport England Priority Sports:
Athletics, Badminton, Canoeing, Cricket, Cycling, Equestrian, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Netball, Rowing, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Sailing, Squash, Swimming, Tennis and Triathlon.
How can I apply for a Brunel University Sport Scholarship?
You can apply for a Sports Scholarship award by requesting an application form sports-scholarships@brunel.ac.uk, or you can download a form here. The closing date to submit your application is 27th August 2010. Once the closing date has passed, all applications will be reviewed by a selection panel and a decision will be made against the criteria set. Any references you submit will be checked and all applicants will be notified by writing of the panel’s final decision
